The United States military is deploying approximately 3,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East today, as the Pentagon expands its military options in the Iran war, with Kharg Island the hub handling nearly 90 percent of Iran’s oil exports emerging as a potential focus of future ground operations.
The Wall Street Journal reported that a written deployment order was expected to be signed on Tuesday afternoon, covering a brigade combat team from the division’s Immediate Response Force, along with the division’s headquarters element to oversee logistics, planning, and command coordination across what officials described as an increasingly complex battlespace.
Fox News separately confirmed that Major General Brandon Tegtmeier, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, and his headquarters staff have already been ordered to the region. No final decision has been made to commit ground forces to Iran itself, with senior defence officials describing the movement as prudent planning that preserves options for the president.
One scenario under serious consideration involves seizing Kharg Island. Because the island’s airstrip was damaged in recent US bombing raids, military planners believe Marines would lead the initial assault, with combat engineers repairing the runway to allow cargo aircraft to bring in supplies and reinforcements. The 82nd Airborne’s 3,000-strong brigade would then augment and eventually relieve the Marines, who lack the sustainment capacity for a prolonged operation.
The US is also sending three warships and thousands of additional Marines to the region. The Japan-based USS Tripoli, the USS New Orleans, and approximately 2,200 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit are already en route to the area. A second Marine unit, the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS Boxer amphibious ready group, has also been ordered to deploy and is expected to depart California in the coming weeks.
The 82nd Airborne Division is based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and is the US Army’s premier rapid-response ground force, capable of deploying anywhere in the world within 18 hours. The division specialises in seizing contested territory by parachuting into hostile areas. It is light infantry, meaning it operates without tanks or other heavy armoured vehicles.
Despite the military buildup, Trump said a negotiated outcome remains possible. “We are in the throes of a real possibility of making a deal,” he said. “I think if I were a betting man, I’d bet for it.” Iranian officials have continued to deny any negotiations are underway.
