Loyal fans of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class will be happy to know that there’s going to be a revised 2013 G-Class

I always thought that the G-Wagen was nothing to get excited about and I was never really a fan of the box-like shape. I thought it looked like something designed with a ruler and a pencil, but as time went by and I grew, I started to fully appreciate the understated shape, the luxury and power of the vehicle. Nothing says that you have arrived than the Merc in a very cool and subtle way. Move over, loud and noisy pretenders. This is the daddy of all SUVs.
It is easy to brush aside a vehicle when you haven’t really experienced it. I stared in awe at the 2010 G55 and there were plenty others like me who, I’m sure, had the hairs on the back of their necks stand up when the engine was fired up and the deep rumbling noise rattled their insides.
Only when you see these cars in the flesh and get behind the wheel do you feel their power. With an almost cult-like status, the new 2013 G-class won’t disappoint the hardest of critics.

It is unclear exactly which G-Class model this is, but I’m assuming that the one in the picture is the standard G550 (those wheels look much too civilised for an AMG model plus we don’t see the double exhausts). The G-Wagen’s overall design hasn’t changed much (which is excellent because “we like you just the way you are”), but the obvious physical changes for the 2013 model year include LED running lamps under the headlights and redesigned mirrors.
The buzz going round is that the G-Class will feature a reworked interior for 2013, including a new instrument panel, steering wheel and consoles. The big news, however, is that the G55 AMG will now make use of Merc’s 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 found in the other AMG models, though it is unclear if its categorisation will be altered.
It is not clear when the official G-Class details will be released, but since the car appears to be finished and already posing for photos, it won’t be too long before you start seeing them on the streets of Lagos (you know we just love G-Wagens round here).
I was watching the news today and happened to catch news of the sale of Edvard Munchs’ painting of the “scream”, which was sold for a record-breaking $119 million at a time when people said the art bubble would burst on high-valued art. The painting might not be to everyone’s taste and to some it is downright ugly and offensive, and that’s exactly when you begin to get the G-Wagen, a timeless classic, a V8 powered gas guzzler. At a time when petrol prices around the world are hitting record highs, that – and other reasons not to own one – does nothing to discourage ready and willing buyers. Also, like Munchs’ painting, it is one of the most expensive models in the Mercedes Benz line up, with a price tag that’s guaranteed to make you scream.
Clearly a millionaires’ play thing, the 2013 G-Wagen is a lot of things and it seems no matter how high the price is, it is never going to be short of collectors. It is a status symbol, an icon, and a dream.
