IMG_0665The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) in cooperation with the Port Development Partnership (PDP) Africa-Netherlands has successfully completed a one-day seminar on Sustainable Port Development.

The seminar which took place on Friday 20th?of June was hosted by GPHA and the PDP to highlight the importance of knowledge transfer and kick-start the knowledge exchange for the growth of the Maritime and Transport sector in Ghana.

Driven by an increasing world demand for natural resources, exploration, production and export, it appears Sub-Saharan Africa is rising fast and growing both economically and demographically.? Admittedly, infrastructure is key in the further development of West Africa?s economic growth whether among sea-countries or landlocked countries. As the ports infrastructure and hinterland connections expand, there arises a greater need to develop local human capital.

The seminar which focused mainly on port infrastructure and operations tackled complex port activities including ?New Opportunities for Enterprise?, ?Port Planning?, ?Terminal Optimization?, Development of Port Community System?, ?Nautical Safety?, ?Building with Nature Approach?, ?Public Private Partnerships?, ?Port Security?, ?Logistical Improvements? and ?Environmental Monitoring? among others.

Participants drawn from PDP, GPHA and other stakeholders in the maritime industry exchanged ideas on the initiative of setting up a Port Training Institute (PTI) in Ghana. The PTI is an Initiative of GPHA and so far the PDP members- STC B.V, Deltares and UNESCO-IHE have all expressed interest in supporting GPHA to develop the institute.
