Another dead whale has been washed ashore in the Western Region of Ghana. It was found at Escape Ecolodge at Cape Three Points in the Ahanta West District.

FoN_Whale_Cape3Points_1The body was already decomposed and dismantled to the point that only parts were observed at the shore indicating that the whale must have been dead for a while. Witnesses said that they brought up the carcass on Wednesday but overnight it was washed aback again into the ocean.

The waves washed the body on the rocky coast so most parts were scattered along the shoreline. Today locals hauled it onto the beach with a rope tied to it. Only the internal organs and the tail were left, the head and the flesh of the mammal were missing. Parts of the flesh could be seen floating in the sea.

This episode increases the total amount of dead marine mammals found at Ghana?s beaches up to 20 since 2009. Just last week two mammals were washed up dead in the Western Region, too, at Asanta in the Ellembelle District.

Friends of the Nation, a socio-environmental NGO in the Western Region, is documenting these incidents and keeps track of the number and locations of the dead mammals. The intention is to draw the attention of the public to these unfortunate happenings and to advocate for research into the actual cause of death of the marine mammals.
