?The destiny of man is to unite, not to divide. If you keep on dividing, you will end up as a collection of monkey throwing nuts at each other out of separate trees? ? T.H White. The Longman Dictionary defines unity as when group of people or countries agree or are joined together. Better still, the quality of being united into one. Strength on the other hand can be described as the physical power and energy that makes somebody or someone strong.

MARFO YUSIFThe topic on board ?unity is strength? simply means our coming together, either being countries, individuals or religions, is the topmost of all; when talking about reaching our targets. If everyone helps to hold the sky, then one person does not become tired. Moreover, only one tree does not make a forest. Whenever fruitful outputs are met, there is always the need to consider the source, for there is no smoke without fire. A typical example is the coming together of cement and sand to create a concrete. We need to consider why this concrete is hard to break.

Actually, the real beauty of the world is equal for everybody, as the motto of Islamic Ahmadiyya community goes ?Love For All, Hatred For None.? The spirit of unity was given by God equally to all without any restriction or discrimination. Parents in families admonish their wards to draw closer to their classmates in various institutions, irrespective of their ethnicity and cultures to promote unity.

From this smaller unit, we move on to the bigger horizon of society. People in various societies see themselves as one people under their leaders and to ensure their well-being. They work together tirelessly to the promotion of the society. The end result is the eradication of diseases, conflict, and hatred; hence strength -the unique power of unity.

With unity, there?s determination, faith, ability and that development. ?Unity is strength? is the national motto of Belgium and Malaysia, later taken by Bulgaria and Haiti. These and many other countries, such as America, with unity, had met immense advancement since immemorial. However, lack of unity that exists in Sierra Leone, Angola and Iraq has dumped the nations into the pool of war and hatred. Nations of these type loose innocent and very much precious citizens who could have added something significant to life.

This has made the people unable to buy and sell, with the exception of the rich. Nevertheless, the concept of unity respects not the rich or the poor. Additionally, it has made people unable to relate freely to some others. People see each other as foes, deadly weapons. Most politicians and wealthy folks only deal with their mates, leaving behind the poor and the disabled. Yet they claim to be patriotic and educated; incredible!

My Dear reader, if we must educate them, then they should recognize that whether good or evil, whether life in itself is pain or pleasure, whether sweet or sore is not the most important thing but the unity of the world, and the embracing of the big and small from the same stream. In general view, we need to understand that human life of wealth, wisdom, understanding and power was given to all. It does not shine on the few. So just as nature is indifferent to our station or situation, we need to know that we?re all equal and that we should fight to move ahead the mountain, as the saying goes- ?together we stand, divided we fall.?

We need to focus on the strong ideas and things which will boost us forward as far as unity is concerned; not places, values, or particular personalities which can be blown away with the next, great wind. We must disregard the difference in ethnicity and race, for unity among various races is vital for the progress of nations. We should also consider and hug the consequences of unity, not the consequences of discrimination. Some of these attitudes of ours have made people feel they need to climb mountains and swim oceans in other to make difference in their lives and that promote equity among their colleagues.

Surely, unity is strength. Other important ingredients needed for preparing unity include love, patience, and truth. Winston Churchill says that ?when there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you.? These words portray the fact that a bundle is unbreakable, and only one person can never form a family. Let us all value unity in whatever house it dwells.

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give us a spirit of unity among ourselves as we follow Him, so that with one heart and mouth, we may glorify His mighty Name. Nothing more, nothing less.
