Unilever Ghana Limited, as part of its activities to mark this year?s Global Hand Washing Day, which fell on October 15, has presented a newly-constructed Hygiene Station to the Tema Newtown Presbyterian Cluster of Schools.

The newly-constructed Hygiene Station, according to Unilever, is worth GH?50,000 and consists of eight washrooms and six hand washing units. It is to be used by both teachers and pupils of the cluster of schools.

Maidie Arkutu, the Brand Building Director Of Unilever Ghana Limited, who handed over the hygiene facility to the school, noted that the donation signified her outfit?s commitment towards improving the health and wellbeing of the pupils of the school and communities at large.

She said the gesture represented Unilever?s preparedness to improve the health and wellbeing of not only pupils but a billion people across the globe by the year 2020.

The gesture, according to the Brand Building director, formed part of Unilever?s service investments aimed at inculcating the habit of regular hand washing everyday.

She pointed out that over 2 million children under the age of five died each year from diarrhea and pneumonia, and urged parents to ensure that their children washed their hands with soap and water so as to help tackle the menace.

?Washing one?s hands regularly with soap can avert one million deaths a year,? she remarked.

She encouraged teachers and pupils of the school to make good use of the facility to serve future generations.

Receiving the facility, Patience Arthur-Badoo, Head of Presbyterian Cluster of Schools, thanked Unilever for the kind gesture.

She used the occasion to appeal to other corporate bodies to emulate the kind gesture of Unilever, and presented a certificate of appreciation on behalf of her outfit to Unilever Ghana Limited.

Nii Shipi Armarh of the Tema Traditional Council, who represented the Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Kraku II, commended Unilever for providing the cluster of schools with the Hygiene Station.

He appealed to companies and institutions in the Tema metropolis to help the traditional council tackle sanitation problems in the area.
