The United Kingdom High Commission in Ghana has announced the opening of a new visa application centre in Tamale, bringing British visa services to Northern Ghana for the first time and eliminating the need for residents across five northern regions to travel south to apply.
The new centre, the third of its kind in Ghana, is located at the Tamale Premium Application Centre, Pension Tower, Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Building, Second Floor, Tamale, and will become operational on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. It will operate on Mondays and Tuesdays from 08:00 to 16:00 GMT.
The opening brings direct relief to residents across the five administrative regions of the northern belt, covering the Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East, and Upper West Regions.
The expansion is part of the broader efforts of VFS Global, which became the UK High Commission’s third-party visa application service provider in October 2024. A delegation from the company visited Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on February 25, 2026, to strengthen institutional cooperation and improve the quality, transparency, and efficiency of visa and consular services.
Globally, VFS Global operates 4,027 application centres across 167 countries, serving 70 client governments, and has processed over 533 million transactions since its establishment in 2001. The company manages administrative and non-judgmental tasks related to visa, passport, and consular applications, allowing governments and diplomatic missions to focus on core assessment and decision-making.
The development is expected to significantly cut the time and cost burden on applicants in the north, who previously had to travel to Accra or Kumasi to submit applications and biometric data.
