The former England manager went into this game with one thought – losing against Liverpool could end his career with the Toons but his players showed real character and tenacity in front of their unbelievable 51, 273 spectators.

The Reds took the game to the home side right from the blast forcing three corner kicks under two minutes, but Jurgen Klopp’s side could not make it count and had to wait midway into the half to open up Newcastle’s defence but Benteke missed from a close range.
Senegalese striker Papiss Cisse should have broken the deadlock in the 30th minute when Wijnaldum set him up, but the Lovren arrived on time to snuff out the chance from the striker.
Mbemba and Jordan Ibe signed off the first half with missed opportunities each. First, Mbenda headed over Papiss Cisse’s flick-on whiles Liverpool’s striker Ibe’s shot missed the post by inches.
Newcastle finally took the lead in the 67th minute Georginio Wijnaldum’s shot was sliced into the net by Skrtel in an attempt to block the effort.
With Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana thrown into the mix by Klopp, the Reds were going to press Newcastle further up, but Sturridge fired blanks as Dutchman Wijnaldum chipped one past Mignolet for Newcastle’s second in time added on to make sure that the Toons urge closer to leaving the relegation zone.
