Oh sleep, why have you stayed so late?
Oh sleep, why have you deserted my eyeballs?
My body is tired
My brain is retired
Yet sleep, you deny me desired rest
When you?re at your best
Oh sleep, why don?t you induce sleep,
That will conduce to my rest when the night is steep?
Oh sleep, when you do come,
You come as a thief
Oh sleep, I have hallucinations and nightmares when you arrive
Are you a sleep murderer?
Are you a rest plunderer?
Is insomnia your other name?
Are you a dream-maker?
You jolt up people when they are at it,
With babies, you ferry them gently to fairyland
But with adults, you flood their minds with a flurry of worries and thinkages
Oh sleep, why do you keep eluding me?
Are you a mirage in the desert?
Are you a phantom playing Tartuffe with my eyeballs?
You tantalize me with a cosy water bed
You cajole me with playing melodious oldies to put you to sleep
Yet sleep, you are a stubborn child
You sleep with your eyes half open, your brain half alert, and ears
cocked on the ready
If I were a baby, I would ask for a lullaby,
If I were your paramour, I would ask for a wrapper,
Oh phantom sleep, why murder my leisure at your pleasure?
I stay steep into the night, waiting and waiting in vain,
Waiting at least to hear your inaudible footsteps,
But not even your shadow falls on my maligned sleep
Your stealth has stolen my sleep,
Anguish has drained and sapped my energy
Oh sleep, come and be my bedfellow
When I?m tossing and turning,
Turning and tossing on my pillow
