THE GENERAL Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has affirmed the party?s commitment to implementing the one-time National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) during its second term if retained in power.
The NDC in the run up to the 2008 elections promised it would implement a one-time premium which will enable Ghanaians to make a one off payment for health care in the country.
With barely three months to go for the 2012 elections, the party is yet to implement the policy raising questions about its ability and commitment to execute the policy.
The ruling NDC has been chastised especially by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for reneging on the one-time premium promise it made to Ghanaians.
But speaking on Joy FM, Wednesday, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who also doubles as campaign chairman of the John Mahama campaign team said that promise, will be fulfilled during the party?s second term.
According to him, the ?NHIS had to be revamped and in doing so, you have to get the law in place first; we had challenges in getting the law through Parliament. I am happy to note that just last week the law has been passed so it establishes the platform for us to be able to implement whatever is contained in the law in our second term.?
He stressed that while the NDC envisaged a monolithic scheme, the NPP ?was talking about individual schemes scattered all over the country and therefore the unbearable overhead cost that infringes on the finances [of people].?
He said there was consequently the need to revamp it to aid smooth passage and implementation of the policy.
