The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has added his voice to the many others dismissing the claim by Nana Akufo-Addo that the National Health Insurance Scheme faces imminent collapse ? and the subsequent attempts by his fateful to justify the claim.
He agrees that the scheme has challenges, some of which had to be immediately resolved, as stated earlier by Dr Richard Anani, the foremost defender of Nana Addo?s claims but Mr Pratt finds none of these institutional challenges or a combination of any threatening enough to lead an impending collapse of the scheme.??the last NPP government introduced the National Health Insurance Scheme to remove the constant fear of falling ill under the inhumane cash and carry system,? Nana Akufo-Addo said in his delivery at the Institute of Economic Affairs Evening Encounter Tuesday 12 August.
Adding: ?It has been painful to watch the NDC government try its best to collapse the NHIS, whilst struggling to implement their unrealistic one-time premium promise. Today, the fear of getting sick is back. The NHIS has been degraded and cash and carry is back.?
It is not true, Mr Pratt said Thursday morning when speaking on the matter in a radio interview. ?I feel very very sad that it has come to this level ?the scheme has not collapsed, the scheme is working and that those who are employing the scheme to resolve their health problems admit that the scheme is working.?
??there is no institution anywhere in the world which does not have challenges. All the political parties including the New Patriotic Party have challenges; it doesn?t mean that the parties have collapsed?.
Mr Pratt went on to ask proponent of Nana Akufo-Addo who insist the NPP flagbearer did not say the scheme has collapsed to stop since he was emphatic in his IEA delivery that the scheme has collapsed.
?He ended his statement by stating that cash and carry was back. Now if cash and carry is back then the scheme has collapsed because the scheme was meant to be the substitute to cash and carry, the scheme was meant to expand access to health. So if cash and carry is back Nana Akufo-Addo could only have been meaning that the scheme has collapsed.?
