Independence Of The State Legislature Receive Imo State Backing

Ahead of the nation?s ongoing constitution amendment, the Imo state House of Assembly, yesterday voted in favour of local government?s autonomy, abolition of state Electoral Commission, as well as the financial and administrative autonomy of state Houses of Assembly, independence of the legislature, constitutional establishment of Houses of Assembly Commission and the separation of the offices of the ministry of justice and that of the Attorney-General, in the interest of national development.

The House took the position during plenary, in Owerri, the state capital, while considering the further amendment of the 1999 constitution proposal sent to them by the National Assembly, as part of the requirements needed for the amendment of the nation?s constitution.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon Benjamin Uwajumogu, who introduced the matter, at the committee of the whole House, urged Honorable members to consider the bill and vote freely in the interest of the country.
Hon Simeon Iwunze, representing Isiala Mbano state constituency moved a motion in support of the amendments and urged his colleagues to support the amendment in the interest of National development.

The House unanimously passed the amendments by over two-third majority of the votes, saying the amendments was in the interest of the nation.
