From a hidden room inside an Atari cartridge to a spinning Google search result, software Easter eggs have travelled a long distance in half a century, moving from quiet acts of programmer defiance to deliberate tools of user engagement deployed by the world’s largest technology companies.
The tradition is widely traced to 1979, when Warren Robinett, a developer at Atari, embedded a secret room inside the game Adventure for the Atari 2600. At the time, video game and software companies were deeply reluctant to credit programmers, fearing that their popularity could outshine the company brand. Robinett’s response was to bury his own name where only the most persistent players would ever find it.
Steve Wright, Atari’s Director of Software Development, embraced the hidden message rather than remove it, and became the first person to officially call these in-game secrets Easter eggs. The name stuck, and so did the practice.
Through the 1980s and 1990s, Easter eggs spread rapidly across the software industry. Microsoft Excel 97 famously contained a hidden flight simulator, while developers used Easter eggs as a means of artistic expression, technical experimentation, and subtle commentary. These secrets circulated through word of mouth, online forums and technology magazines. Discovering one felt like being admitted to an exclusive club.
By the early 2000s, however, software had become too critical to business and government operations to accommodate undocumented code, however harmless. Security concerns prompted companies including Microsoft to formally discourage the practice. Easter eggs did not disappear. They evolved.
Today, the most iconic and frequently searched Easter egg remains Google’s “Do a barrel roll,” which spins the entire search results page and has been a staple of Google’s public personality since its debut. Other widely known examples include typing Pac-Man, Solitaire or Snake into Google’s search bar, which launches playable browser games directly in the results page.
The shift in intent is as significant as the shift in form. Where early Easter eggs were hidden indefinitely, modern versions are often designed to be found and shared. They function as cultural signals, rewarding curiosity while reinforcing a company’s identity. Tesla embeds playful modes that transform vehicle dashboards into arcade-style experiences. Android devices reveal mini games when users repeatedly tap the version number in settings.
The practice has extended beyond screen-based software into hardware itself, with semiconductor designers known to etch tiny cartoons, initials, or messages into chip photomasks, features invisible during normal operation but visible under a microscope during technical teardowns.
The limits of the tradition remain clear. In aviation controls, banking infrastructure and medical systems, hidden or undocumented features are firmly off limits. Transparency and reliability take precedence. Even in consumer software, companies must balance surprise with trust. A hidden feature that behaves unpredictably can shift quickly from charming to alarming.
Online communities are now dedicated to spotting, decoding and cataloguing every hidden reference packed into games, films and software platforms, turning what was once a solitary discovery into a participatory sport. The Easter egg has become its own genre of content.
What has not changed is the underlying impulse. Behind every hidden feature is a developer who wanted to leave a mark, to remind the person on the other side of the screen that a human made this. In an industry increasingly shaped by automated pipelines and anonymous updates, that impulse remains stubbornly alive.
