The government has lifted curfews imposed on Karaga Township and 11 communities in the Gushegu District of the Northern Region, citing a marked improvement in the security situation in both areas.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak announced both decisions on Thursday, April 30, acting on the advice of the National Security Council (NSC) and through Executive Instruments in each case.

The Karaga curfew was originally imposed on April 15, 2026, running from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am daily, following chieftaincy disturbances in the district. It was revised on April 20 to run from 8:00 pm to 4:00 am, then renewed on April 27 on the same hours before being fully lifted on April 30, two weeks after it was first imposed.

Despite the lifting, a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and offensive weapons remains in force in Karaga Township and its surrounding communities. Authorities warned that anyone found carrying such items will be arrested and prosecuted.

The communities in the Gushegu District whose curfews were simultaneously lifted are Paboni, Yidaani, Kukpok, Busun No. 1, Busun No. 2, Nagnani, Nayagile, Donbin, Kolik, Tinyongu, and Klokpan.

The government called on chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents in all affected areas to exercise restraint and to resolve outstanding disagreements through peaceful means rather than confrontation.
