Ghana’s boxing Interim Management Committee (IMC) has extended its professional boxer health screening deadline to Friday, May 29, after heavy rains disrupted the registration process at Jamestown Police Station in Accra.

The IMC, operating under the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), launched the registration exercise on Monday, May 25, as part of what it describes as a wider reform agenda aimed at improving athlete welfare and professionalising the sport. Heavy rainfall during the week forced a revised timeline, with the planning committee pushing the final cut-off to accommodate boxers who have yet to complete the process.

IMC Chairman Samir Captan, in a letter formally communicating the update, said the initiative reflects a deliberate shift in how Ghanaian boxing manages the welfare of its athletes. “Your health and safety remain our top priority,” Captan said.

Registration continues daily at Jamestown Police Station from 8:00 AM, with medical screening to be conducted at La Paz Community Hospital. The IMC has arranged bus transportation for participating boxers on the screening day, and all medical tests will be fully funded, removing any financial barrier to participation.

IMC Coordinator Gideon Oyiadzo, widely known in boxing circles as Jingles, described the current phase as the final opportunity for unregistered professional boxers to join the exercise. Officials have stressed that the extension is intended to ensure maximum participation across the professional ranks rather than leave any active boxer without a health record.

The screening programme forms part of the IMC’s broader effort to restructure governance within the GBA, with athlete welfare, competitive longevity and professional standards positioned as central pillars of the reform agenda. Boxers requiring further information can contact GBIMC Secretary Patrick Johnson on 0244201628 or Coordinator Gideon Oyiadzo on 0541706002.
