The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has opened talks with Moroccan coach Walid Regragui as it races to fill the vacancy left by the dismissal of Otto Addo, with GFA President Kurt Okraku revealing that more than 600 applications have been received for the role.
The GFA confirmed Addo’s exit on Tuesday, saying it had “parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team, Otto Addo, effective immediately,” and thanking him for his contribution to the team.
The decision followed a difficult March international window in which Ghana were beaten 5-1 by Austria before losing again to Germany, prompting an emergency meeting involving the FA, the Sports Ministry, and the coach after the Germany game. Across his second spell, Addo recorded eight wins, five draws, and nine defeats in 22 matches.
The GFA has since opened talks with Regragui, who led Morocco to a historic World Cup semi-final in 2022, making him one of the most decorated African coaches available. Other names in circulation include Hervé Renard, Tom Saintfiet, Marc Brys, and former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah, who is currently managing Sudan.
Okraku confirmed that the volume of interest in the position has been extraordinary. “We have received over 600 applications for the Black Stars job,” he said in an interview with 3Sports, adding that a new coach would be named within one to two weeks. Both local and foreign candidates are under consideration.
The sacking comes just 72 days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Ghana drawn in Group L alongside Panama, Croatia, and England. The incoming coach will have limited time to prepare, with friendlies against Mexico and Wales scheduled for May providing the only opportunities to assess the squad before the tournament begins.
