It's not often that someone sentenced to house arrest asks to go to prison.

The former head of Yugoslavia’s secret service has been charged as an accomplice in the murder of a political dissident 31 years ago in Germany.

Zdravko Mustac was charged on July 22 following his extradition from Croatia in April, Germany federal prosecutors said Tuesday.

The 72-year-old Mustac is now a citizen of Croatia, which joined the European Union last year.

He is the third person to be charged in the case, which dates back to 1983 when the leading Yugoslav opposition figure Stjepan Durekovic was shot dead in Bavaria.

Durekovic was a member of a group of Yugoslav dissidents living in Germany.

His killer was never identified, according to prosecutors. However, they believe that Mustac ordered his subordinate Josip Perkovic to plan the murder. Perkovic was also extradited to Germany.

The trial set to begin in October.
