The Alliance for Democracy (AD) on Monday attributed the high cost of governance to the presidential system of government being operated in the country.
The National Secretary of the party, Rafiu Salau said in Abuja that the outcry about high cost of governance was an ingredient of democracy.
“The high cost of governance should not be an issue because the presidential system we adopted is the best suited for the country.
“When you look at the national data, practising presidential system of government, and the level of development is higher, there is nothing good that does not have high cost,” he said.
According to Salau, the benefit of running the system should be more paramount to Nigerians than the cost.
He noted that the number of personnel working with each public office holder was another way of creating job opportunities.
The scribe added that it would give the personnel an opportunity to contribute their skills to the development of the country.
“There is no any assistance attached to any public office holder; we should not look at the cost alone; we should also look at the benefits,” he advised.
“What we need is what we are doing now, unmindful of the cost; we should try as much as possible to increase the benefit so that people would be happy with the best dividends of democracy,” he said.
According to him, official aids are working with public officers because they (public officers) do not have monopoly of knowledge.
Salau said public office holders needed professionals to assist them in undertaking their responsibilities in order to succeed.
He said that each worker employed to be part of any team must have a role to play even if some lack offices.
The secretary, however, cautioned public officers against appointing unwanted or over bloated aides, to cut cost of governance and avoid generating more problems for themselves.
