The Director of Communications for the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nii Armah Akomfrah has said the much talked about merger of the two Nkrumahist parties, the CPP and PNC will happen before the December polls.
According to him, although some party members are not in favour of the merger, it would go ahead nonetheless since considerable progress has been made by both parties in that regard.
He indicated that the two parties have agreed to maintain CPP as the name for the merged party and would combine the emblems of both parties, i.e. the red cockerel of the CPP and the coconut tree of the PNC as the party’s emblem. The PNC’s motto: ‘Service in Honesty’ has also been agreed on as the motto for the united Nkrumahist party.
Speaking on Multi TV’s current affairs show, pm: EXPRESS, Mr. Akomfrah said most of the issues that need to be addressed before the merger have been sorted out. A meeting scheduled for April 15 is expected to move the talks to a different level.
On the issue of who becomes the presidential candidate and running mate since the PNC just elected its flag bearer and the CPP is about to do so next month, Mr. Akomfrah said an earlier agreement reached between the flag bearers of the two parties for the 2008 elections, i.e. Dr. Edward Mahama and Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, for one of the flag bearers to maintain his position as flag bearer whilst the other becomes the running mate is still binding.
An electoral college will then decide on which of the two presidential candidates should be the main candidate and who should be the running mate.
The merger of national executives from both parties into one executive body will also be considered after the merger.
He argued that unlike the NPP and NDC administrations which have had to deal with various issues of corruption, the united Nkrumahist front is ready to serve the people of Ghana well as many people have assured them of their votes once they are united.
He added that the time has come for Kwame Nkrumah to be honoured in his own home as is being done elsewhere and the best way to do that was to vote for his legacy and his party.
