The Ga South Municipality has served notice to some churches ?that are taking laws into their own hands to disturb residents within the metropolis in recent times.
In effect, these churches have been given a 21-day ultimatum to install soundproof system in their church buildings or face closure.
This action has come as result of some complaints it received from some residents within the municipality calling on the assembly to take action against churches that make excessive noise.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Weekly Observer, last-friday in Accra, the Ga South Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Jerry Akwei Thompson, hinted that the Assembly upon discussion with some of the churches within its catchment areas, had set April ending as the deadline for all churches to comply with the directive or face closure.
He said the assembly, was enforcing its bye-laws on noise making and that churches which do not comply with the directive will face penalties.
He advised churches within residential areas to mute their system or minimized its sound level to at list 58 decibels at night, else the law would deal with them without fear or favour.
Mr. Thompson expressed worry about the rapid growth of churches within the municipality, stating that most of the churches have no permit not to talk of been registered under the assembly and the assembly would soon clamp down on such churches soon.
He, however, advised churches to obtain permits from the assembly before putting up church buildings, adding that regulating their activities periodically with the assembly would avert the companies about their activities.
According to him, “the assembly have observed that Easter is at the corner there awaiting, so churches should please make sure that you reduce your sound levels to minimize complaints from the residents? he stressed.
