The building is the third to collapse in the estate in the space of three months.
A duplex on Saturday collapsed in Abuja, as fate would have it, all occupants escaped unscathed. The semi-detached duplex which houses two families, located at the Citec/Mbora estate, caved in Saturday morning.
Occupants of the building were able to leave in time as the vibration before the collapse allowed them enough time to escape. The building, which had exhibited some signs of collapse before its eventual fall, is the third building collapse in the estate in the last three months.
Residents of the estate said they had seen the collapse looming.
Audu Oseni, a resident said: ?The buildings are too fragile, built with fake building materials.? Oseni said residents had complained severally to the estate managers and the Federal Capital Development Authority about the inferiority and weakness of the buildings. Both authorities ignored the complaints.
Citec International Estate Limited reportedly developed and sold each duplex for N15 million. The estate is located along the Jabi Airport road bypass in Abuja. The collapse highlights the poor quality of buildings in Abuja.
Officials of the Federal Capital Development Authority often neglect their quality control duties for stipends from estate developers, ignoring ill constructed building, thereby putting lives of occupants of such buildings in grave danger.
This year, at least five buildings have collapsed in the city, killing at least four people.
