Meanwhile the campus of the University of Mines and Technology (UMAT) was a sight to behold last Sunday afternoon when an entourage of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), led by presidential candidate, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, called on the student leadership.

The party was met with singing, drumming and dancing about 500 metres away from the Chamber of Mines Hall where the leadership of the party met with the student body.

They danced slowly but excitedly in front of the convoy of 8 cars towards the venue

Addressing the students later, Dr Nduom charged them to examine him and the two other leading contestants, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to see who was best suited for the position of President since they were all applying for the job. He then went on to tell them about what he did when he was in government.

According to him, he played a leading role in the production of the Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS 1) document, which ensured that Ghana got debt relief under the HIPC initiative.

He also mentioned his initiative in the National Identification project, the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) and the Millennium Challenge Account which brought into Ghana $547 million for various projects including the N1 Highway, the refrigeration system at the airport and two new ferries on the Volta Lake.

He also bemoaned the current state of Tarkwa, a well-known mining town.

He described the plunder of the town as unfortunate and promised that “as President of the Republic of Ghana, I will make sure we add value to everything we produce,”… “so Ghanaians can get jobs to do.”

The National Secretary of the party, Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, asked the students to be alive to their responsibilities and challenge the massive corruption going on in the country.

He noted that something drastic had to be done to reduce the number of drop-outs at the Junior High School level before the situation gets out of hand.

The National Youth Leader of the PPP, Divine Nkrumah, encouraged the students to vote for the party to ensure a better future for the youth.

The Interim Executive of the Progressive Youth Movement (PYM), UMAT branch, was then inducted into office.
