Accra will trade some of its urban pace for the rhythms of traditional Ghana this weekend as the Back to Your Village Food Festival opens its 2026 edition on Saturday at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park.

Organised by Channel One TV and powered by Citi FM, the two-day event is a major highlight of Heritage Month 2026 and runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The venue is a shift from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) forecourt that hosted the 2024 and 2025 editions.

This year’s format goes further than a food fair. Organisers have structured the grounds as a series of cultural villages, each representing a distinct Ghanaian identity, with visitors moving between a Ga setting, a Volta-inspired space and northern Ghanaian cultural zones within a single park. Alongside the food will be live traditional music, storytelling, and displays of traditional kitchen tools including grinding stones and earthenware bowls, all designed to place the cuisine in its cultural context.

The menu will be recognisably Ghanaian: waakye, banku, tuo zaafi, kenkey with fish and soup, fufu, konkonte, and a wide range of regional drinks including asaana, pito, sobolo and palm wine. The 2025 edition drew over 30,000 visitors across its two days, making it one of the most attended cultural events on Accra’s calendar.

The 2026 edition has also drawn international attention. Suriname’s Minister for Education, Science and Culture, Dirk Max Currie, visited Ghana ahead of the festival and said his country intends to replicate the concept, describing the model as one Suriname could adapt given its own diverse food heritage.
