Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday voiced high commendation for Ghana’s contribution to the liberation struggle of Zimbabwe, culminating in the country’s independence from colonial rule in 1980.

Mnangagwa, who arrived in Ghana earlier in the afternoon on a three-day state visit, said during a state banquet that Ghana had served as a key training ground for Zimbabwean freedom fighters, according to a release from the presidency.

“Most of my colleagues received training here in Ghana for the armed liberation of Zimbabwe. We are forever grateful to Ghana,” said the visiting president.

He added that the visit presents opportunities for strengthened business-to-business cooperation and affirmed that the state visit underscores the longstanding ties between the two countries.

In his remarks, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama reiterated Ghana’s commitment to deepening ties with Zimbabwe.

Mahama noted that the connection between Ghana and Zimbabwe “predates formal diplomacy” and was forged through the defining struggles for Africa led by visionaries like Kwame Nkrumah and the late President Robert Mugabe.

The Ghanaian president emphasized that the shared ideals of freedom, dignity, and Pan-African unity continue to guide the two nations.

The evening is “not merely ceremonial; it is a celebration of a relationship shaped by history, enriched by shared experiences, and sustained by genuine human connections,” he added.
