-After Two Decades of Demonstrating Public Hatred for him

After over two decades of inexorable bashing and refusing to recognize his brother-in-law as Head of State of Ghana, veteran Journalist and Editor-in-Chief of the Accra Mail, Alhaji Haruna Attah has for the first time extolled the virtues of former Air force pilot turned president, Jerry John Rawlings, describing him as a great leader.

Alhaji Haruna Attah?s description of the former military strongman as a person whose legacy includes the longest constitutional era in Ghana?s history did not only attract a thunderous applauds from large assemble of people gathered at the National Theatre for the National Commission for Civic Education?s Annual Democracy Lecture but also assumed an eye popping and jaw dropping experience.

The renowned Journalist made the ground breaking revelation whiles serving as the Master of Ceremony at the NCCE event of which former president Rawlings was one of the high-profile personalities at the high table.

The relationship of the two statesmen, who interestingly are married to two blood sisters, has been frosty during the presidency of the National Democratic Congress founder and even beyond.

In an emotionally charged atmosphere as Alhaji Haruna took to the microphone to introduce his brother-in-law and former President, he remarked ?I bashed him a lot when he was ruling the country, but it is time to let bygones be bygones,? adding that ?the Fourth Republic is very much part of President Rawlings? legacy.?

Former President Rawlings graced the event with his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings at the instance of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who was the keynote speaker at the NCCE lecture.

Alhaji Haruna Attah, husband to Nana Yaa Agyeman, who is a sister to Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, also acknowledged and commended his sister-in-law, who was also at the function. To a cheerful smiles from the one-time tough military leader, Alhaji Haruna noted that, aside being in-laws, both he and the former President have reverence for Asante culture; a reason that informed their decision of marrying Asante women.

This year?s lecture was also presented as part of activities marking the 20th year of democratic consolidation in Ghana, and Haruna Attah attributed the successes chalked by the country over years to the hard work of his once bitter rival.
