When it comes to exploring the earth and the earth’s subsurface, new technologies are always being developed that make it a little easier and more efficient.  Many industries like oil drilling and virtually every kind of underground mining depend on technology to help locate what it is they are after.  GIS, or geographic information systems is one technology that is able to integrate different types of information and data with important geographical data to help explore the earth.  This is sometimes called earth mapping, and within that technology is another, known as 3D modelling.  3D modelling gives a company or organization the ability to see the earth in three-dimensional form, which provides a host of different benefits.  Knowing exactly what the underground landscape looks like and its dimensions helps to reduce the element of risk and the costs associated with discovering what you are looking for.  Using 3D modelling enables scientists and engineers to integrate magnetic data and gravity data with seismic, geologic and other data to gain a better understanding of what is going on under the surface of the earth.  When 3D modelling is used as part of a total GIS system it can enhance the prediction of earthquakes and create a better understanding of history and what happened at different points in time.  Current tools and technology are invaluable for researchers and businessmen alike.  For businesses like oil and mining, much of the expense comes in accurate location of what they want.  If you can use the different tools of earth mapping to find oil faster, coal, diamonds, potash or anything else, your costs will drop and profits will rise.  When the guesswork can be reduced or taken out of any underground exploration, you can bet that whoever is doing the exploring is going to benefit. Successfully modelling the subsurface of the earth depends on a variety of factors, and earth mapping along with 3D modelling is able to help considerably.  One of the unique qualities of this kind of technology is that it is able to integrate various types of data into precise tables and reports to give a better understanding of what is happening.  When the relationships between different underground elements and materials can be understood, the entire process is enhanced.  3D modelling is just one tool, but it is a very useful and important tool.  The ability to receive detailed, 3D images and maps of underground structures without having to break the surface is a dream to many underground explorers.  Earth mapping is like being able to peel layers off the earth’s crust and then place them back again without any evidence you’d even been there.  Of course, earth mapping is highly technical and not just anyone will grasp the data that is being created, but within exploration industries it is crucial to know and to utilize on a regular basis.  After so many years of not knowing, exploration now has texture to add to its bag of tricks.
