Mr. Perry Nelson, Director of Information and Communication Technology, said already, over 9,000 people
have been registered under the new system through out nine regions of the country, and about 11 million were
expected on board by the end of the year.
implementation of the new biometric system was to clean the membership
database, avoid duplication of cards, effective verification system,
link membership provider attendance to claims management, and ensure
access to the NHIS card on time.
With the new system, every accredited service
provider or health facility would be given a ginger print scanner,
Identity card reader and a portable computer to enable service providers
take correct data.
Mr. Nelson said, the instant issuance of the NHIS
card was the single most important feature of the new scheme and was
however quick to warn the public of overcrowding at the various offices
to change the old cards.
?The old card will be used alongside the biometric
one until they are gradually phased out; once your old card is valid,
you can continue using it until you have a biometric card?, the Director
of ICT added.
In the region, five districts namely, :
Sekondi/Takoradi, Nzema East, Ahanta West, Mpohor and Wassa East, would
be hooked onto the biometric system as the first phase of implementation
followed by the rest of the districts.
