Addressing a one-day Southern African Development Community seminar that discussed future challenges on food, water and energy Tuesday in the capital Windhoek, Maria Amakali said the country’s hopes are on the Neckartal Dam under construction in southern Namibia.

The seminar organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Namibia-Angola in conjunction with the Polytechnic of Namibia was attended by more than 50 experts and scholars from the region.
When completed, the Neckartal Dam will be able to store 856 cubic millimetre with a supply area of 39 square kilometers.
The water will be enough for irrigating about 5,000 hectares.
With a 45,365 square kilometers catchment area, the dam is expected to have an annual runoff of about 397 cubic millimeters.
The agriculture minister John Mutorwa told the seminar that the rapid urbanization and industrialization were putting a strain on water sources.
The minister also said massive capitalization was needed for providing water and sanitation services in urban areas. Enditem
