Professor Anthony Afful-Broni, Pro-Vice Chancellor of UEW, who made the call during the passing out parade, said the recruitment became necessary as a result of numerous challenges that confronted the security section of the school which created a sense of insecurity.

He said the security section was set up in 1992 as part of the establishment of the university and it was initially staffed with the then watchmen of the various colleges.
In 2015 the security section was up-graded and renamed the Directorate of Security Services, mandated to provide services including access control, protection of key and vulnerable points, fire fighting, traffic control and parking services, he said.
Prof. Afful-Broni said other roles they played were the provision of first aid, key/front desk management, basic investigation, security awareness creation and patrolling of the university boundaries under the supervision of their shift leaders.
He said management would continue to provide the logistics they needed in the discharge of their duties.
