The Tsakos Shipping and Trading S.A. (TST) Group, has presented a Ballast Pump to the PSC Tema Shipyard, which allows a ship to pump water in and out of very large tanks.
This compensates for a change in cargo load, shallow draft conditions, or weather.
TST has spent more than $12,000,000 in the past years dry-docking its diversified fleet consisting of tankers, container and dry cargo vessels at the PSC Tema Shipyard.
In addition to ship transport, TST has interests in industries as diverse as ship repairs, onshore exploration, oil and energy, real estate and forestry.
TST is also the proud sponsor of Maria Foundation Tsakos, a non-profit organisation based in Uruguay that for the past 23 years aim at fostering links between the Uruguayan and Greek people through language, history and culture.
The donation was made by Captain Alkiviadis Kappas, Tsakos West African Representative and received by Mr HRT Ali, Chief Executive Officer of Tema Shipyard.
Captain Tsakos, who is also the Honourary Consult of Ghana in Greece, said the donation is part of the Social Corporate Responsibility of the Tsakos Group and was in recognition of the collaboration, which exists with the shipyard, following the dry-docking of the Mt NIPPON PRINCESS and tug boat- BLACK STAR.
?We recognise the efforts being made to upgrade the shipyard and having this close collaboration, wish to maintain our relationship and help the PSC Tema Shipyard increase their revenue.
?As you are aware we have our own Shipyard in Montevideo- Tsakos Industrias Navales and as such, this industry is very close to our hearts.
?We look forward in the future to helping PSC Tema Shipyard in future business and at the same time we would welcome involvement in any plans for the future of the shipyard, always with the participation of the Ministry of Transport and the Management and Board of the shipyard,? he said.
Mr HRT Ali, Chief Executive Officer of Tema Shipyard, thanked the Tsakos Group for the donation as well as its continued support.
He called for greater collaboration with Tsakos Group.
The Maria Tsakos Foundation is behind the establishment of St Nicholas Preparatory School, located at Tema Manhean in Greater Accra Region, catering for underprivileged children in the sprawling fishing community.
The school project was initiated in February 2012 with the motto: ?Every child has a right to education.?
Beginning with 28 children from four to six years in one class, the school now has 60 children in four classes, with seven permanent teaching staff.
There are long term plans for a vocational college to be constructed to teach skills such as information technology, and tourism for the community.
The school hosts the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral of Accra.
The Tsakos Group is involved in charity work in the country since the 1980?s and among other interventions sponsored the Tsakos Junior Athletic Championships through which, Ghana has been able to send a considerable number of athletes to study and train in the US .
The Group has over the years been assisting Ghana Athletics Association and Ghana Olympic Committee.
