Trucks transporting various imported goods to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are marooned in Zambia following recent temporal closure of Kasumbalesa, a one-stop border post with DRC, a civic leader said on Thursday.

There has seen slow movement of trucks into DRC as a result of screening for COVID-19. Titus Tembo said that most trucks were from countries in southern Africa Development Community (SADC) as well as from the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), some with confirmed coronavirus cases. “That poses a high risk of COVID-19 because most trucks are coming from countries that have recorded coronavirus,” he said.

Speaking in an interview with Xinhua, Tembo said all trucks have to park outside the town as they transit the country. The council has restricted loitering around the trucks and security was alert to monitor on the trucks movement for clearance at the border. Tembo also expressed concern over sanitary condition for the drivers saying should the situation continue, the council will have to provide mobile toilets.
