The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in collaboration with the National Sanitation Campaign Taskforce has organized about 2000 volunteers to assist the Tema Sanitation Campaign Taskforce to clean and desilt gutters in the Tema Metropolis.
Personnel of the Tema Regional Ghana National Fire Service(GNFS), Police, social groups and the Tema Metropolitan Waste Management Department, joined the Taskforce this weekend to sweep markets, lorry parks and desilt gutters in and around the Tema central business area , Community Two, BBC and Tema Manhean.
Cleaning equipment including, wheel barrows, head pans, gloves brooms, shovels and rakes were distributed to the members to work with while the GNFS had a stand by water tanker for use in flushing the gutters.
The Tema Zonal Manager of Zoom Alliance, Mr George Ajuadze, speaking about the exercise, said it will be held continuously for the next three months to ensure that all filth was cleared.
Mr Ajuadze said 500 of the Taskforce members were recruited through the Tema Metropolitan Waste Management Department of the Metropolitan Assembly and is yet to be inaugurated.
He said the creation of the taskforce was necessary to make available a group that will always clean the Metropolis and also encourage the public to practice cleanliness.
Areas where the clean-up exercise was carried out included the market area in Community One and Community Two BBC, where the taskforce removed weeds and collected sand which had silted the gutters.
They were later joined by the Tema West candidate for the National Democratic Congress, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo to clear the gutters.
He said it was unfortunate that Tema, a well planned township had challenges with sanitation and appealed to the residents to make use of the taskforce to clean the Metropolis.
He was happy that the exercise was dominated by volunteers, assembly members and residents, which he said, was a positive sign of concern about sanitation.
Similar clean-up exercises were held at Ashaiman, Nungua and Teshie simultaneously.
