The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a man identified as Bismark Kpormeni for allegedly possessing a large quantity of compressed plant material suspected to be narcotic drugs, in what authorities describe as part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking in the region.

The arrest took place on Sunday, May 31, 2026, during a routine operation by the Highway Patrol Unit along the Tema–Ada road. According to police, the suspect, who was driving a Hyundai Mighty II container truck, failed to stop when signaled by officers and instead attempted to flee. A pursuit ensued, leading to his eventual arrest at Bondase.

A search of the vehicle uncovered twelve sacks and eighty parcels of compressed plant material hidden inside the container and carefully wrapped in sellotape, a method often associated with attempts to evade detection during transport. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspected narcotics were loaded at Kpeve in the Volta Region and were being transported to Ada, raising concerns about organized distribution routes within the country.

The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations, while both the vehicle and the seized items have been impounded as evidence. The police say such interceptions form part of broader national efforts to disrupt the movement and sale of illegal drugs, which authorities warn continue to pose serious social and security risks.

In an update on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, Bismark Kpormeni was arraigned before Circuit Court A in Tema, presided over by Her Honour Ms. Maame Yaa Mensah. His plea was not taken because investigations are still at a preliminary stage. The court subsequently remanded him into police custody, with instructions for him to reappear on June 16, 2026, as the case continues.

The Tema Regional Command has reiterated its commitment to fighting drug-related crimes and is urging the public to support law enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious activities promptly.
