The Telecel Ghana Foundation has extended its maternal health outreach to Naaha in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region, providing free prenatal ultrasound scans and health consultations to 134 expectant mothers on March 30, 2026.

Organised in partnership with the Divine Mother and Child (DMAC) Foundation, the outreach was held at the Naaha Health Centre and drew pregnant women from Naaha and surrounding communities including Ga, Kulmasa, Tanina, Kunfabiala and Dadafuri. Healthcare professionals conducted ultrasound screenings, provided prenatal education and issued specialist referrals where complications were detected.

The intervention addresses a critical gap in the Upper West Region, where many rural women must travel long distances to access diagnostic services. Sahaji Swaidin, public health nurse in charge of the Naaha sub-district, said the timing of the support was urgent and welcome. “Most women in the Naaha community must travel long distances to Wa and other areas to access maternal care. We are grateful to Telecel Foundation and DMAC Foundation for bringing this support closer to our women,” he said.

One beneficiary, Majid Wasiwa, a pregnant resident from Wa East, travelled over 130 kilometres to reach Naaha for the outreach, underscoring both the demand for and the scarcity of such services in the region.

Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, Head of Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications at Telecel Ghana, said the initiative falls under the Foundation’s Connected Health pillar and supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.1, which targets a global maternal mortality ratio below 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030.

The Rural Ultrasound Scan initiative runs on a bimonthly basis and has previously reached communities in the North East, Upper East, Eastern, Savannah and Northern regions of Ghana.
