The accident happened on Thursday at around 9 am (E.A.T) in Pangamlima area near Korogwe Township, 300km from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s commercial capital.
“So far 11 people died and six of them have been identified,” the police officer said, adding that the driver of the bus is among those who died in the tragic accident. The two vehicles were irreparably damaged.
The accident occurred along the busiest Dar es Salaam-Arusha highway.
He, however, said that the conditions of the five people who were injured were not improving.
Doctor-in charge at the Korogwe District Hospital confirmed of receiving the injured, saying their condition was in a critical state.
Tanzania has an appalling record of fatal traffic accidents due to reckless driving, poor roads, and badly maintained vehicles.
The road from Chalinze to Tanga and Arusha is one of the roads in Tanzania which are accidents’ hotbeds due to its sharp corners and narrowness.
According to Tanzania’s Commanding Officer Traffic Police DCP Mohamed Mpinga, a big increase of “motorcycle taxis” popular known as “boda boda” has largely attributed to the increase in death rate.
Traffic reports show motorcycles were leading in accidents since they were allowed to operate commercially in the country 2009. Enditem
