Companies with big turnovers have an opportunity to deposit their cash right away from their offices, thanks to an introduction into the local market of a new technology.
Business Machines Tanzania Limited (BMTL) Accounts Manager, Mr Zacharia Kinyula said over the weekend in Dar es Salaam that the technology — Teller Safe –would help in ensuring safe deposits. “The machine is simply a bank within one’s office. What the banker has to do is to connect the machine to its computer system and when the money has been deposited, the bank issues the customer with a receipt,” he said.
Mr Kinyula said that unlike in the past whereby bank customers were faced with risks of being robbed while on their way to the bank, such bad experience would now be the past history. “The machine has a big safe which is about 600 kilogrammes. This ensures safety for the deposited cash. This technology is widely applied in Europe and in South Africa,” he said.
The company has also introduced a new automated teller machine (ATM) technology with a sensor whereby a customer will not have to insert a card as it is in the current machines. “The Diebold ATMs are unique in Tanzania and unlike the current one in the market, a customer will not have to insert a card but rather he or she will just have to swap”, he said. He said this will help in avoiding risks of cards being ‘swallowed’ by machines.
On his part, BMTL Director, Mr Ramakrishnan Kirubakarani noted that the banking experience in the country will not be the same again with the new technology. He noted that the idea was to make BMTL a one stop centre for all the banking machines right away from computers, UPSs, ATMs, money counting machines and Teller Safes which are constructed by double layers of high tensile steel plate to prevent striking.
