The chief diplomats of Iran, the United States and the European Union will meet next week in Vienna for talks on curbing Tehran’s nuclear programme, an EU spokesman confirmed Wednesday.
At the previous round of talks in New York last month, no breakthrough was achieved by Iran and the six world powers that it has been negotiating with – Britain, China, France, Russia, the US and Germany.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton are due to meet Tuesday, according to Ashton’s spokesman, Michael Mann.
They will be joined by US Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday, he said.
Both sides aim to reach a deal by November 24 that would place strict limits and inspections on Iran’s nuclear programme in order to prevent the country from building nuclear weapons. In return, international sanctions would be lifted.
Talks between the US and Iran are key to the negotiating process, because of the US sanctions that would have to be scrapped.
The speed at which sanctions will be scrapped and the extent to which Iran will be allowed to enrich uranium are among the main points of disagreement.
