Nearly a month has passed since the partial opening of Tier One of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Takoradi, Western Region, which has significantly eased traffic congestion for local and travelling motorists.
The partial opening marks a significant milestone in constructing the three-tier interchange, designed to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion, particularly during peak hours. The newly opened section connects Liberation Road from Market Circle to the Agona-Nkwanta highway and the PWD highway to the Agona-Nkwanta highway.
Despite the progress, drivers heading towards the Takoradi-Accra road must still detour through the Takoradi Mall to join the main road, as the direct connection from Accra Road remains closed. Urban Roads officials have indicated that this partial opening temporarily alleviates traffic while construction continues on the remaining sections of the interchange.
Motorists are advised to proceed cautiously in the newly opened areas as work is ongoing. The interchange, located at the Takoradi-Accra highway (N1) intersection and the Takoradi Port access road, is expected to enhance road infrastructure, improve safety, and reduce travel times once fully completed.
Residents and local stakeholders have expressed their hope that President Nana Akufo-Addo and project partners will remain committed to completing the interchange, which had faced delays. The ongoing road network development in Sekondi-Takoradi includes the reconstruction and dualization of the Takoradi-Agona Nkwanta highway, the Axim Road highway, and the Takoradi-Sekondi road, all aimed at boosting connectivity and economic activity in the region.
