Risk Even If You Drink Just One

Sugary drinks have been linked to kidney stones ? even if you drink as little as only one serving a day. Yet there are other drinks that could actually reduce your risk of developing the painful stones.
Dr. Gary Curhan, the senior author of the study recently published online in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), summed up the findings in a statement:
Their analysis followed almost 200,000 people over a median time frame of more than eight years. People who drank one or more sugary sodas and punches had a 23 percent greater chance of developing painful kidney stones than those who didn?t.?[T]he relation between fluid intake and kidney stones may be dependent on the type of beverage consumed. We found that higher consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks was associated with a higher incidence of kidney stones.?
However, they also had good news. People who drank coffee, tea, wine, beer, and orange juice actually had a lower risk of getting the stones.
Expanding on his report in an interview with Reuters, Dr. Curhan explained that most doctors recommend that people drink plenty of fluids to fight the formation of kidney stones. But some drinks are definitely more harmful than others.
Soda drinkers had a 33 percent greater risk, and the punch drinkers had an 18 percent higher risk ? averaging out to the 23 percent increased risk for the sugary beverage fans.
Some drinks are more beneficial too. Only 96 out of 100,000 people who drank a glass of red wine every day developed kidney stones. But 174 out of 100,000 who didn?t got the stones. And a red wine ingredient seems to have other health benefits too for people who drink only one serving a day with dinner.
