The Elders of the Konkomba Community in Accra have firmly rejected claims by an individual purporting to be the community’s chief for the Greater Accra Region, describing such assertions as false and misleading.
At a press conference held in Accra on Monday, the Secretary to the Council of Elders of the Konkomba Yam Market, Mr Anthony Toayaam, stated that Ubor Binikacha James Kpajal remains the duly chosen and enskinned Konkomba Community Chief of Accra.
He explained that Ubor Kpajal was selected by a Council of Kingmakers and officially enskinned on October 22, 2025, following the demise of the third chief, Ubor Abraham Bio, who passed away on September 3, 2024, and whose final funeral rites were performed in April 2025.
Mr Toayaam said the process leading to the selection of the new chief was transparent and in line with long-established customs of the community. He noted that a committee was constituted to receive applications from interested candidates, with clear criteria including residency within Central Accra or Olebu, good character, and the principle that chiefs are not transferable from one jurisdiction to another.
Out of five aspirants, he said, Ubor Kpajal emerged as the most suitable candidate after extensive consultations and deliberations. The Elders, however, expressed concern over what they described as “spurious claims” by one Ubor Magan Kumboln, who has been presenting himself on social media as the Konkomba Community Chief for the Greater Accra Region.
Mr Toayaam stressed that such a title is unknown to the traditions and structures of the Konkomba people in Accra and warned that the claim could create confusion and tension within the community.
Providing historical context, he noted that the Konkomba Community Chief in Accra has, since 1985, been recognised by the Ga Traditional Council following the formal presentation of the then chief, Ubor Kwabena Ntiador, to the Ga chiefs.
He said this recognition underscores the importance of respecting local customs and the authority of the traditional custodians of the land.
“It is important that as settlers, we remain mindful of the customs and sensitivities of our hosts and avoid actions that could undermine established traditional authority,” Mr Toayaam said.
He further alleged that Ubor Kumboln has been moving around with individuals posing as national security operatives to intimidate members of the Konkomba community in an attempt to gain undue recognition.Such actions, he warned, constitute criminal conduct and have been reported to the appropriate authorities.
The Elders called on all Konkombas in the Accra metropolis to disregard the rival claims and unite behind Ubor Kpajal to promote peace, unity and development within the community.
They also urged public officials and stakeholders to take note of the legitimate leadership and avoid lending support to unverified claims.
