The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hon. Sherry Ayittey has condemned recent attacks on personnel of the Fisheries Enforcement Unit [FEP] by some fishers at Akplabanya, a fishing community near Ada.
She has warned that people who engaged in the acts of attacking such personnel would be arrested and prosecuted.
The sector Minister sounded the word of sounded the word of caution during a press briefing in Accra. According to her, a similar attack incident on personnel of the Unit at New Amanful, a suburb of Takoradi in the Western Region.

She disclosed that the ministry has put in place mechanisms to arrest some fishers who use fishing methods in their expedition.

According to the minister, such attacks have often resulted in injury of some Police personnel as well as the vandalizing vehicles belonging to ministry.

“The Fisheries Act 625 was passed in the year 2002 to monitor control, survey and enforce laws governing the fishing industry” she hinted.

The Unit, she disclosed, is made up of personnel from the Ghana Navy and the Air Force,the Marine Police from the Ministry of Interior as well as state lawyers with the mandate to man the nation’s fishery resources.
