The GMO Plant Breeder?s Bill has generated a lot of controversy and opposition in the country led by the Convention People?s Party (CPP), Food Sovereignty Ghana, Coalition of Ghana Farmers Association, Movement for Farmers Right Against GMO Ghana, National House of Chiefs, Brong Ahafo Traditional Chiefs and many other civil societies in the country.

The Speaker Hon Adjaho has directed that further and much broader consultation ought to be done by all concerned groups opposing the said bill due to the overwhelming amount of petitions he has received.

It is also to be noted that over 166 countries including Ghana?s leading trading partner the European Union (EU), have officially banned Genetically Modified Foods.

So far, the CPP has been the only political party in the country leading the fight against its imposition with Farmers groups and civil societies with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and major opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in support of the Bill.
