South Sudan Gets More Aid

The United Nations said it would provide an additional 33 million U.S. dollars in aid to assist South Sudan’s strife-plagued communities.

“The funding, allocated from the South Sudan Common Humanitarian Fund, will help aid organisations reach people with critical condition in need of assistance, including water and sanitation, education, health care, nutrition, livelihood support and mine clearance,” UN deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey said.

“More than four million people do not have sufficient food in South Sudan and more than 70,000 people have been internally displaced since the beginning of the year.”

UN figures showed that the world’s newest nation hosts some 220,000 refugees, mostly from Sudan.

South Sudan won its independence from Sudan on July 11, 2011, under a peace deal.

Continued tribal clashes in South Sudan’s eastern state Jonglei have caused heavy casualties and forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes.

Last week, the UN Central Emergency Response Fund approved six million dollars to aid agencies to provide food, nutrition, water and sanitation supplies to affected communities in Jonglei.

The fund will help feed up to 60,000 people for the coming months.

UN peacekeepers in South Sudan have also started to conduct daily patrols to ensure the safety of civilians returning to their homes and access to aid agencies to bring supplies to the affected people.
