A meeting on technology concluded in Mogadishu as multilateral lenders pledged financial support to accelerate digital transformation in Somalia.

“Somalia has economic, security and environmental challenges. Utilizing the strength of our youth toward the discovery of innovative solutions in science and technology is our best chance to overcome those challenges,” Somalia’s Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development Jamal Hassan told the Somalia Tech Summit on Thursday.


More than 5,000 people attended the event that brought together Somalis involved in the tech industry and representatives from the government and multilateral institutions.

Financial institutions like Salaam Bank pledged 5 million U.S. dollars in the next three years to support innovations that transform livelihoods.

Dozens of young innovators showcased their products at the summit, including a blood bank mobile app called Hibeeye, or “Donor” in Somali. Enditem
