The Agona West Constituency branch of the ruling National Democratic Congress [NDC] has asked the opposition New Patriotic Party [NPP] in the area to keep quite over the collapsed bridge of the Akora River as it has no solution to help remedy the problem.

According to the NDC, the NPP is only using the disaster to score cheap political points by black mailing the Mahama led-administration over the situation.

The NDC?s response follows an earlier intended demonstration by the opposition NPP about a month ago about the problem, and also threatening to take over the project and solicit for funds to repair the damaged bridge and give it the party?s colours if the NDC government does not repair the bridge in two weeks from the day it gave the warning.

The warning by the NPP forced the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr. Charles Obeng Inkoom to come out to condemn the NPP, describing the threat as a bluff, as he put it ?the job is for men and not boys, and has been duly awarded on contract and therefore could not be taken over by any group.?

The bridge collapsed when the contracted dredging the river in an attempt to blast a stone in the river about four months ago brought down the foundation of the bridge as a result of the intensity of the blast.

The situation has since then created heavy traffic congestion in the town as the bridge serves as alternative route to divers, apart from the main road that passes through the town.

Speaking at a press conference, the Communications Director of the NDC in the Agona West Constituency, Emmanuel Korley described the situation as unfortunate and regrettable, but he however cautioned the NPP to desist from using the situation to score cheap political point by propagating falsehood about the NDC that the party does not have the welfare of the people in the area at heart.

He assured that as a social democratic party, the NDC will not abandon the people of the area to their fate but is doing everything possible to repair the bailey bridge as soon as possible.

He condemned the spreading of alleged false information by the opposition NPP that the Chiefs and elders of the town had no knowledge of the dredging until the day the unfortunate incident happened.

It would be recalled that the NPP in the constituency held a press conference few months after the incident and asked on the government to repair the damaged bridge as soon as possible or it solicit for funds and repair it and give it the party?s colours.

This development has created some impasse between the two political parties for some time now.
