Street Library Ghana, a non-oovernmental organisation, has inaugurated a reading hub for seven communities in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality at the cost of GH?25,000.00
The reading hub, situated at Anoff, would see school children coming from Darmang, Ahwerease, Onoka, Adjeikrom, Kwesitenten and Duayeden to read.
Ms Jemima Ansong, Programme Officer, Street Library, Ghana said the construction of the facility was in response to the need for a more accessible, conducive and user friendly place to read literature provided for them.
Ms Ansong was speaking at the inauguration of the facility and the 2014 inter-community education competition in Nsawam.
She said the competition was one of the annual events organised to inspire and motivate children to take their education seriously.
Some of the activities to be contested for include reading, spelling bee and quiz.
Ms Ansong said the organisation?s aim was to improve on the literacy rate in deprived communities by making available books to feed the educational needs of school children.
She said the NGO had also introduced a digital library with the sole purpose of digitizing books and preserving the Ghanaian culture, not only among children but adults as well.
?The project has been in existence for the past three months and we have received about 5000 downloads on the platform that makes accessibility of the content possible,? Ms Ansong added.
Mr Hayford Siaw, President of Street Library, Ghana told the Ghana News Agency that the reading hub had about 1,500 children’s books and eleven laptop computers.
He said the laptops would help the children access electronic books to enable them improve on their reading and writing.
Mr Emmanuel Otoo, Programme Officer, Global Fund for Children, commended the management of Street Library for their efforts to improve on the quality of education in the rural communities.
He expressed the hope that the project would be sustained and called on government and other stakeholders to support the project and appealed to parents to advice their children to visit the reading hub regularly.
Mr Otoo urged the members of the community to maintain the facility and also for the hub to be stocked often with new books.
Mankrado Anoma, an elder of Anoff, expressed gratitude to the management of Street Library, Ghana for providing the communities with the facility.
