Ghanaian security forces have intercepted weapons and detained an armed suspect during a targeted operation in Binduri, near the volatile Bawku area.
The dawn raid on April 21, 2025, conducted by joint military and police units, marks the latest effort to stabilize the conflict-ridden region.
Military personnel from the 11 Mechanized Battalion and Joint Task Force responded to gunfire near Binduri’s central market, cordoning off the area before apprehending the suspect. The operation yielded significant arms discoveries, including an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, and nearly 500 rounds of ammunition, alongside tactical gear.
A subsequent exchange of gunfire occurred hours later when troops repelled an attempted incursion by unidentified assailants. No injuries were reported in the clash, though the incident underscores persistent tensions in the area.
The Ghana Armed Forces emphasized continued vigilance in Bawku, where intercommunal violence has claimed numerous lives and displaced residents in recent years. Authorities have urged community cooperation with security operations, noting that recovered evidence will aid ongoing investigations into armed groups fueling instability.
This operation follows heightened military deployments to the Upper East Region, where border security challenges and ethnic disputes have compounded security concerns. Analysts observe that while such interventions disrupt armed networks, lasting peace will require complementary dialogue initiatives addressing the conflict’s root causes.
