History of Malappuram
Malappuram is a military headquarters for Zamorins of Kozhikode, who ruled this place during ancient times. Tipu sultan also had a fort at Malappuram. During British rule, they constituted Haig barracks at the bank of the Kadalundi River.
Every year during summer season, “Malappuram Nercha” is celebrated in the memory of Martyrs, who struggled for the freedom of India. It is also a centre of Vedic and Islamic studies.

Perinthalmanna is 20 kms away from Malappuram. Famous Thali temple and Thirumandhamkunnu temple are located here. Annually pooram festival is celebrated during March or April month, which attracts thousands of visitors to this place.

It is 40 kms from Malappuram and is located in Kozhikode-Ooty highways. It is known for its teak plantations. World’s first museum for teak and Kerala state’s forest research institute is stationed 4 kms from Nilambur.
