Sametro Company Limited, MTN distributor in the northern sector of the Western Region, has presented 20 desktop computers, a three-in-one monochrome copier, and a 10KVA UPS to protect the machines at a cost of GH?39,150 to the Geomatic Information System (GIS) Remote Sensing Laboratory Department at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Takwa.
The donation is to aid the university to develop and improve its information communication technology to a level such that it will serve as a backbone to the schools? development strategy in teaching, research and innovation.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Emmanuel Owodoo Kwaansah, Operations Sales Manager of Sametro Company Limited, explained that the presentation is in response to a proposal written by the GIS department of the university.
Also, he said it will help in research: ?If education is not based upon research and evidence, then it runs the risk of being based upon theories, convenience, prejudices, and research enables decision-making to be more empirical.
?Research can help teachers to understand what works and why, what the short- and long-term implications are, provide a justification and rationale for decisions as well as identify problems, inform improvement, among others.?
Prof. Jerry Samuel Kuma, the Vice Chancellor of UMaT, said: ?The world we find ourselves in today is where climate and environmental change is taking the centre, and it behoves individuals to be abreast with the changes that are happening around.?
He said the presentation will support the GIS Remote Sensing Laboratory Department of the school in their research studies and assured the company that the equipment presented will be well looked after for other students not yet in the school to enjoy it.
