Menas Associates and new partners Clyde & Co host a breakfast briefing on ‘Re-assessing Security in the Sahara-Sahel’ delivered by the eminent Professor Jeremy Keenan
On 27 February, Menas Associates and Clyde & Co co-hosted an event entitled ‘Re-assessing Security in the Sahara-Sahel’. The breakfast briefing was attended by political risk insurers, various energy companies, mining and exploration companies, banks, embassies and high commissions and airlines ? appealing to a very wide audience.
The presentation explored the issues surrounding the background to (and current status of) the Sahara-Sahel, in particular:
-????????????? the recent problems in Mali and Algeria following on from the In Amenas terrorist attack
-????????????? France’s sudden intervention in Mali
-????????????? the nature of the Islamist groups operating in the region
-????????????? the future impact of these political and security events on countries within this region, specifically the implications for those doing or planning to do business in North Africa
-????????????? other foreign investor considerations, amongst other topics.
The keynote speaker, Professor Jeremy Keenan is a Research Associate at SOAS. He is a social anthropologist and a recognised world authority on the Sahara (on which he has published six books, with two more in the pipeline) and its peoples, especially the Tuareg. He is the author of Menas’ Sahara Focus, Algeria Politics & Security and the new, fortnightly Mauritanian analysis. He is an internationally recognised political risk and security analyst on the Sahara-Sahel region, and advises numerous government organisations (EU, US State Department, US AFRICOM, FCO), international agencies, NGOs and oil, gas and mining companies on developments in the region. He is a regular contributor to media networks around the world (BBC, Reuters, Le Monde, France24, RFI, Al Jazeera, CTV, CNN, etc.). He has recently served as an expert witness on Sahara-Sahel and North Africa security and terrorism cases in both UK and US Federal courts.
